The goals of sustainable development were formulated in 2015 at the Conference of the United Nations and there are a total of seventeen goals. The goals are interdependent and the fulfillment of one goal affects the fulfillment of the rest.
The goals of sustainable development, also known as the global goals, are a universal call to put an end to poverty, conserve the environment and ensure peace and prosperity of all.
I NO POVERTY
Although the number of people living in extreme poverty has halved since 1990, the number of those who live on mere subsistance is still large. One of the goals of sustainable development is to put an end to poverty in all forms by 2030.
II ZERO HUNGER
It is estimated that in 2014 there were 795 million of the chronically malnourished. More than 90 million children under age of 5 suffers from a severe form of nourishment. Every fourth person in Africa is starving. For this reason one of the goals of sustainable development is the reduction of global famine by 2030, taking into account that all the people, especially children and the most endangered ones, will be provided with quality food all year long.
III GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
Every year more than 6 million children die before reaching the age of five. Every day 16,000 children die from curable diseases. For this reason one of the goals of sustainable development is universal health coverage and good and efficient medication including vaccines.
IV QUALITY EDUCATION
According to this goal all boys and girls will finish free elementary and secondary school by 2030. Also, this goal will ensure equal oportunities in terms vocational education, plus removal of economic and gender differences.
V GENDER EQUALITY
Sustainable development ensures the abolishment of discrimination against women and girls. There are still large inequalities between men and women in terms of paid work at the labour market in some parts of the world. This goal will provide universal protection of sexual and reproductive health and same rights to economic resources.
VI CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION
Water shortages affect over 40% global population and it is estimated that this number will grow with the rise in global temperatures. This goal will provide universal access to clean water at a reasonable price by 2030 as well as creation of adequate infrastructure, sanitation facilities and improved hygiene at all levels.
VII AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY
In 2011 the renewable energy sources made up over 20% produced electricity worldwide, however every fifth person still lives without electricity. The aim of this goal is universal access to cheap electric energy by 2030 as well as investments into clean energy sources.
VIII DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
This goal promotes sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and technological innovation. Also, it promotes policies which foster entrepreneurship and new work places as well as abolishing enforced labour, slavery and human trade.
IX INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE
This goal promotes sustainable development by way of increased productivity and technological inovation. As more than a half of mankind live in cities mass transportation and new work places are essential, plus sustainable economy, inclusive and sustainable industrialization, investment in scientific research and innovation.
X REDUCED INEQUALITIES
The 10% most rich make up for 40% total profits, whereas the 10% most poor make up for only 2-7% total profits. This disparity is a call to action and one of the goals of sustainable development by 2030.
XI SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES
More than half of world population live urban areas and the number is constantly growing. Sustainable development cannot be reached without a new approach to building and managing urban space. Sustainable development fosters safe and affordable living and improvement of impoverished communities.
XII RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION
Sustainable development requires urgent reduction of human ecological footprint, which will be done by change in the way we produce and consume goods and resources. Sustainable development encourages economy, businesses and consumers to recycle and reduce the amount of waste, plus helping developing countries rely on sustainable consumption by 2030.
XIII CLIMATE ACTION
There is no country which has not experienced first hand the dramatic consequences of climate change. Annual losses from earthquake, tsunamism tropical cyclones and floods total hundreds of billions of dollars. By way of reaching this goal the plan is to allocate 100 billion US dollars on a yearly basis to meet the demands of developing countries and mitigating catastrophic effects of the climate change.
XIV LIFE BELOW WATER
The lives of more than depend on marine and coastal biodoversity, however 30% global fish population is overexploited. Sustainable development provides a framework for sustainable management as well as protection of marine and coastal ecosystems from pollution from land and mitigation of ocean acidification.
XV LIFE ON LAND
Human life is dependent on land as much as on oceans. Today large degradation of land is taking place, and the loss of earth is 30-35 times bigger than historical rate. Sustainable development fosters conservation of land ecosystems such as forests, swamps, dry lands and mountains, and the return to their initial state.
XVI PEACE, JUSTICE AND STRONG INSTITUTIONS
We live in a world of ever growing divisions. Some regions are at constant peace whereas others are permanently exposed to cycles of conflict and violence. Sustainable development promotes reduction of all means of violence as well as co-operation of governments and communities with a view of permanent resolution of conflicts and tensions.
XVII PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS
The goals of sustainable development can be realized only with strong commitment to global partnership and co-operation. Today‘s world is highly interconnected. The availability of technology and information foster exchange of ideas and innovation. Global partnership is one of the 17 goals which make the Program of Sustainable Development by 2030. To reach any one of the goals it is imperative to work on reaching all of them.
